Some History on Founders' Day WAA's Founders' Days commemorate the first class held at UW-Madison, taught by Professor John Sterling on February 5, 1849. Founders' Days celebrations are held every year, from January through May, and are sponsored by the local alumni club chapters throughout Wisconsin, across the country, and around the world. Most Founders' Day events feature a dinner or reception, a presentation by a prominent UW-Madison faculty member, and other fun, fundraising, and/or educational components. To learn more about Founders Day visit the Wisconsin Alumni Association website.

The WiCell
Research Institute, located in Madison, Wisconsin, is a non-profit organization
established by the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation in October 1999 to
advance stem cell research. WiCell is a supporting organization of the
University of Wisconsin-Madison. WiCell's scientific director is James Thomson,
DVM, Ph.D. Dr. Thomson is a professor of anatomy at UW-Madison and was the first
person to isolate and successfully culture human embryonic stem cells. WiCell
owns five lines of human embryonic stem cells. These stem cell lines are listed
on the NIH National Stem Cell Registry as available for researchers and suitable
for use in federally funded research. Through research efforts by their
organization and other research institutions, they are working to uncover the
full potential of stem cells. The
WiCell Research Institute was recently selected by the National Institutes of
Health to establish the federal government's first and only National Stem Cell
